I suppose this could be our entry for the contest, but it's not since we aren't trying to push SEO backwards. You can see the registered page in progress at http://str8.us/ as it comes along. The content needed to be fresher than the start date of the contest so it's on a new domain instead. What better way to test skill and "oes tsetnoc" might than doing it from scratch; no backlinks, paid traffic, no nothing. Not to mention effecting the pagerank of any site you are trying to win with.

The competition is fierce, our entry is a little late, coming in about 20 days after starting, so there was no chance to grab a killer domain name, another reason for the str8.us domain name.
Design Ideas: The site itself is going to be .php based, using alot of includes to control certain aspects of the build. Another "trick" that ties in will be rotating most of the content positions. DID YOU CATCH THAT? The template for the pages have over ??? points that call content, including the < head >metatags< /head >,. All of the points are rotator scripts leading to text files with ??? items, some of those being dynamic as well.
No math has be done on this yet. Once everything is solid, it should fun to reveal the total combinations for each page and the site totals. This can't be an original idea, it's actually a trick one one of the network sites to keep the ads fresh, but the results sere that the page APPEARS to have been there for months, but has fresh content when spidered.

If you're game and want to get into the oes tsetnoc contest, DO IT! The prize for number one on the SERP at Google is $1000 and some killer bragging rights. 2nd and 3rd results get big money and pride too, indented results don't count.

Oh, big rule, only ONE page/url from the site can be entered, no multiples. Good Luck!

How To Rank and Compare Your Site SERP

This put a few things in perspective for me after using webmaster tools and searching by hand for search results. Do this search to find out how many pages you have ranked for a certain keyword or keyphrase and how they rank.

>>> site:www.yoursite.com keyphrase or words <<< that's the "formula" to get a search engine to search just one website's pages.

Now to check ihaveyounow.com for keyword "seo" and keyphrase "seo tools" (Try with and without www) The query looks like these with the short form of the "search results:" for the comparisons.

site:ihaveyounow.com seo ( Results 1 - 59 of 59 from ihaveyounow.com for seo) - Since they are search results, you know which ones are highest in value for that term, plus, check the page rank for the first few for grins.

And so I know which the highest ranked page is and try to find it in the natural SERP without your domain. You can set the serp pages to show 100 results at a time. When logged in to a Google Account, click "Settings" then "Search Settings". I wouldn't recommend too many other changes since you want the cleanest results.

Comparison:
site:ihaveyounow.com people search (Results 1 - 37 of 37 from ihaveyounow.com for people search) - Not so good for a site with 143 pages!
the search: site:str82u.net people search (Results 1 - 100 of about 214 from str82u.net for people search) is good since the site has 254 listed in Google and as a note: adding the word "free" to people search did nothing.

If you've never used that trick before, try it without the key words to see how many pages it shows, compare to your webmaster account for that site to see if they come close.

Javascript Links, Google and Nofollow Tags

As it evolves, Googlebot is able to follow Javascript linksmore and more. Used to be it was a widespread truth, use html over javascript because Google threw rocks over that. The new question we see is, "Do we want Google to see what's on the other side?" since it was believed hidden for so long. The biggest news out of this seems to be adding a "nofollow" tag to the javascript though that goes against years of mixed advice about the posible negative affects using nofollow tags for ad links. Truthfully, we don't know, we're waiting for an answer from higher up than us and look foward to passing that information along if it comes back.

Top Margin With CSS

This article stemmed from using the social community myYearbook, click here to see the page as an example >> People Search. To add a little something noone else seemed to have, the easiest was adding the top-margin: attribute using thier built in CSS editor, something not as familiar to site members as to a webdesigner though they do have a link to w3's css how-to.

Anyone can add this to either the stylesheet or the attribute in any website, tthe social profile is an example we used.

To add a little effect to the page from the background, the margin property can be used to lower the page body. It's easy to do and is a simple matter of adding a line of text to the profile CSS file to create a margin at the the top of the page. Anyone at myYearbook can add this. Go to "Change Profile Layout", select a profile to edit then click "Edit CSS" found below "Close"

Find this, it should be first and might (or might not) look something like this:

BODY {
background: #FFFFFF;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
background-position: left top;
background-attachment: fixed;
}

Then add the extra line "margin-top: 30px;" as it appears below:

 BODY {
margin-top: 30px;
background: #FFFFFF;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
background-position: left top;
background-attachment: fixed;
}

No matter what it says below the line "BODY {", just slip the extra "margin-top: 30px;" in between "BODY {" and the next line like it does above. Adjust the number "30" to whatever you want.

Don't forget to save. You should see the changes right away, though you may need to Refresh/F5 first.

Keep it Str8!
