Using A Content Management System

Posted by  I Have You Admin
CMS is a term given to a website using pre designed layouts. styles and functioning components like content, administration and membership options. Not everyone needs all the features some have, but control over those is up to you. This site is using e107 which is free and offers a demo so you can get an idea of how much it offers. To use, download e107 "Full Install" to your desktop and unpack it, choose the .ZIP if you are unfamiliar with .RAR. There is a site for e107 Plugins to add functionality and e107 Themes for more design and layout variations than the default set included in the install package. That's something you can do once you have everything setup and ready to use.

Many other systems are available, for the purposes of explanation and demonstration, this is what is available at the moment.

The requirements for most are having an SQL Database and PHP on the server, that's almost always the case, including the host we recommend in the previous article. Once you have the database set up and all the files uploaded the installation can begin, usually by going to the website and adding the name of a page, like "install.php" to the site address.

To upload files, an FTP program is necessary, one that is free and easy to use is Core FTP. If asked to CHMOD files, find the file, and Right Click, then choose "Properties" to change the values. If you have additional questions, site members can get help in the forum.

To create a database, follow the directions in the cPanel for your website hosting, some of this information will be needed during installation so keep it handy.
